- Tom Waits (1999): "You ain't seen nothing till you've seen Frannie conducting Mahler, full blast, at the hi-fi standing on a foot stool...in his underwear. He has a brilliant comic mind and is an uncanny observer of life's absurd details. He humanizes all things and immortalizes private illusive moments and makes treasures of them all. Francis has been an indispensable collaborator on many of the projects my wife, Kathleen, and I have done, starting with "Swordfishtrombones; the 'Night on Earth" soundtrack from the Jim Jarmusch movie; "Alice", the Robert Wilson opera done in Hamburg in '93, where Frannie was the musical director and conductor of the opera; and most recently, "Bunny", a short film by CHris Wedge that won an Academy Award for Best Short Animated Film, where Frannie where served as musical director and pianist during the recording of the soundtrack. He has unlimited patience for the creative process and is an excellent teacher. I wish I would have had a music teacher like him when I was in high school. In his early days at San Diego State, he played the Chromelodeon in the Harry Partch Ensemble, for chrissakes! Both experimental and traditional, Frannie responds well to the power of suggestion. If you ask him to play "like your hair is on fire", he knows what you mean. And he has a deep and abiding knowledge of the matrix of composing and arranging, so he brings imagination and madness with him, as well as dignity and reverence for the music. He has a great diversity of appreciation for everything from George Clinton to George Gershwin, from Schubert to Schoenberg. Although he as a vast knowledge of classical music, he never intimidated me with it. He has always made it live for me and speaks of the great composers as if they are still living, and -- of course -- they are. Frannie drives a big ol' white Caddy. "The only car to drive", he says,"because it doesn't matter where you are going; in a Caddy you are already in a better place than anywhere you are going." Which, of course, is true of being with Frannie as well." (Source: "Point Loma Teacher Gives Waits Lessons", by George Varga. San Diego Union-Tribune. June 9, 1999).
